PH1 Arists in Place
PH1 Artists in Place was a project supported by Hiscox Insurance and BAM Construction.
I was one of four artists selected for a long-term residency inside the ancient city walls of York where I documented day by day the development of Hungate and the construction of Hiscox's new office building.
I started to record the development in May 2014 when the area had a hostel for the homeless, a car park and an ambulance station. Since then I have been documenting the clearance of this historical site and the social changes being brought about.
I have observed old streets disappear and the past brought to life through excavation.
Being an Artist in Residence has afforded me the pleasure of working alongside archaeologists from York Archaeological Trust, Architects MAKE, BAM Construction and Hiscox Insurance staff.
Etchings and relief prints have been completed for exhibitions at the Hepworth Print Fair through the Watermark Gallery and most recently The Great North Art Show in Ripon where I won Best Artist and Best Body of Work 2016.
In April 2017 I shall be taking up residency in the same area on the fourth floor of the latest development called Leetham House. Named after the flour mill where it once stood, this project continues to reveal how and why. Working from a new perspective (on the fourth floor) will bring a new and critical dimension to my work, reflecting the changing dynamic of the city.
2017 WORK IN PROGRESS
The Hiscox building is now complete and the site called Hungate is catching up with further phases of construction.
Change remains a subject of interest and over time work will be created in response to being part of a changing landscape.
